FACULTY OF INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

BACHELOR OF INFORMATION SCIENCE (HONS) LIBRARY MANAGEMENT (IM244)

Information is an important resource in the day-to-day operations of individuals, organizations and society. The world has evolved to an age where information technology and information explosion abound, there is a need for qualified information professionals with relevant knowledge and skills to manage, organize, repackage and disseminate the multitude of information resources in all formats. The Bachelor of Information Science (Hons) Library Management program was the 1st library and information management offered in Malaysia. This program focuses on courses that build up on the professional knowledge and competencies in library management, ICT, information literacy, information storage; processing and retrieval, library outreach and user-based services. Exposure to hands-on library work are provided through the many facilities available such as the cataloguing laboratory, the computerized cataloguing laboratory, the experimental library, the reference laboratory and the modern university branch library. Students will be prepared with soft skills to train them to be able to communicate, to conduct presentations, and to apply the components of the application of business knowledge in library management. A variety of teaching modes and assessments are applied throughout the duration of the programme. Their theoretical knowledge is strengthened with a 1-semester industrial attachment in various libraries throughout the country.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT (IM245)

This program recognizes information as strategic resources. It is designed to educate and train students with knowledge and skills in managing information using information systems. It involves analyzing, designing, developing, and managing various types of information systems for identifying, acquiring, organizing, storing, and retrieving as well as disseminating information for users' strategic and competitive purpose. Today, individual user and organization generated lots of information that comes in many forms and format. The information needs proper management in terms of storage, retrieval in the future. Thus in every organization, there are a lot of information systems and that these systems needs professionals to manage them so that the systems able to function efficiently and meet the expectation of the user. The program objective are to fulfill the market needs for competent information system manager that in all ultimately contributes towards the social and national growth, fulfill the manpower needs of professionally qualified information personnel for the development of the nation and in support of vision 2020, educate Bumiputeras to become information professionals who are competitive, creative, proactive and versatile, enable graduates to become catalysts in the promotion of reading habits in line with the development of knowledge-based society, provide academic and professional programs which are of high quality, innovative, up-to date, and relevant to industry's needs and provide quality teaching with the continuous support of practical, research, publishing and consultancy work. The program learning outcomes is in accordance to the level of study based on the eight Malaysian Qualification Framework (MQF) learning outcomes domains.

RECORDS MANAGEMENT AND ARCHIVES ADMINISTRATION (IM246)

Records Management and Archives Administration program started in UiTM (previously known as ITM) as early as 1992. The program started with elective courses in the School of Information and Library Science (currently known as the Faculty of Information Management). A close relationship with the National Archives of Malaysia and other international bodies such as the International Records Management Trust (United Kingdom) helps the Records Management Program to go further particularly when it offered its own degree program in 1999. The Records Management Degree Program was developed because of its potential and demand from the public and private sector and the courses offered in the program are based on the business needs of both sectors to ensure its relevancy and competitiveness. The Records Management Degree Program offered professional courses which are the niche of the program and are closely related and required by the industry such as; Records Management, Electronic Records Management, Medical Records Management, Archives Administration, Oral History and Preservation of Archival Materials to name a few. As of today UiTM remains as the only university in Malaysia offering such a degree program.

RESOURCE CENTRE MANAGEMENT (IM247)

This programme focuses on the management of resource centres and school libraries. It encompasses a range of courses in management and organisation of information resources for resource centers, with the application of ICT and education components as its core areas of specialization. These three areas are offered as major and minor courses in order to prepare for, and produce, highly knowledgeable and skillful information professionals to work in resource centers and school libraries, either in the public or private sectors. Hands-on exposure to resource centre works is provided through the many facilities available, such as the cataloguing laboratory, the experimental library, the reference laboratory and the modern university branch library. To stand out and ensure the employability of our graduates, students will be trained in soft skills as this will help them project a confident persona through effective communication, smart presentations, and the application of business knowledge components in resource centre management. A variety of teaching modes and assessments are applied throughout the duration of the programme. To produce job-ready graduates, their theoretical knowledge is strengthened with a 1-semester industrial attachment in various resource centres throughout the country, and the one and only Resource Centre Management program degree offered in Malaysia.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT (IM701)

The main aim of this programme is to offer specialized professional training and education in the area of acquisitions, creation, generation, organization, retrieval and utilization of knowledge in an organization so as to enhance and sustain the organization's success. The Master of Science in Knowledge Management requires students to complete a minimum of 40 credit hours i.e. 34 credit hours (10 courses) from the CORE courses, and 6 credit hours (2 courses) from the ELECTIVE courses. The curriculum enables students to acquire a good blend of skills and knowledge in the areas of Information Services, Information Systems and Information Management.
